Poikiloderma of Civatte or sun ageing is essentially a collection of skin conditions commonly associated with sun damage, it can also be hormonal or genetic but sunlight seems to play a large part in its appearance. Commonly situated around the neck and chest, it is a combination of some or all of the following;

 

Hyper and hypo-pigmentation, Cherry Angioma, Plane Warts, Telangeictasia (broken capillaries), solar lentigo and all symptoms of premature ageing.

As this area is often completely neglected, with many people now being aware of the importance of apply SPF to the face but forgetting that the neck and chest is just as important.  It is important to note that this condition can be encouraged and worsened by apply perfume to the area as it acts as a photosensitiser, the damage is slow to appear initially but will become apparent with ageing. We ask that you stop applying perfume to the area all together before treatment and apply it to areas that are not exposed to the sun.

 

Treatment for Poikiloderma is not a one off, it will require a series of visits to remove all the lesions and blemishes that collectively create the condition, which we then recommend is followed by a course of microneedling for collagen induction to restore and rejuvenate the skin.

All conditions require a test treatment and the initial consultation will guide you through everything you need to know about the treatment, how to care for the area after treatment, the treatment pathway and the outcome you can expect.

 

During your consultation you will also be given a homecare pack with sterile dressings (where indicated), aftercare lotion and soothing gels as part of your treatment and monitored during your healing process.

 

If you have more than one area for removal you will require this appointment for the full removal of the blemish or blemishes you wish to have treated.

 

Follow on appointments are required for this condition and your practitioner will advise you of the correct length of appointment to book.

 

Is it important to note that while in many cases complete removal can be achieved we cannot guarantee that everyone will have the same results, each person will heal differently and it is important to remember that there may, in some cases, still be some discolouration after treatment.

 

In the instance of Poikiloderma we advise to always wear SPF 50 on the face, neck and chest, to not spray perfumes to this area and to avoid direct sunlight to this area.
